St. Salvator Cathedral

Sint-Salvatorskerkhof 9, 8000 Brugge, Belgium

Description:

The Cathedral of St. Salvator or Cathedral of Christ the Savior is the main Catholic church in the city of Bruges. It was built between the XI and XV centuries. Until the XIX century it was an ordinary city church, and the main cathedral of the city was the Cathedral of St. Donatos, which was located on the central square of the city directly opposite the town hall. At the end of the XVIII century, French troops occupied the city, expelled the bishop and destroyed the Cathedral of St. Donatos, which was his residence. In 1834, after Belgium gained independence, the status of a cathedral was assigned to the Church of St. Salvator, and the residence of a new bishop was created here.

Many works of art that were previously in the Cathedral of St. Donatos were transferred to this temple. The interiors of the cathedral are unusually beautiful, decorated with many ancient tapestries made in 1730, wall paintings of religious themes and skillfully carved wooden decor. Here are stored a large number of art objects, miraculously survived and inherited by the cathedral from the very first parish church.
