City Museum of Fine Arts Groninge

The City Museum of Fine Arts in Bruges is also called the Groninge Museum.

The second name of the museum is associated both with the nearby Groninge street, and, to a greater extent, with the fields of Groninge in the place of Kortrijk, where the famous battle of the Golden Spurs took place. On July 11, 1302, a Flemish militia managed to defeat the mounted army of the French king.

The collection of the city museum began to form from the XVIII century. It is worth noting that the museum got the works of only those masters who lived and worked in Bruges. This tradition continues to this day.

The museum was formed and operated until the XIX century as part of the Bruges Academy of Arts.

The museum presents various areas of painting: early Renaissance, Baroque, neoclassical, realism, symbolism, Belgian impressionism. A special place is occupied by the works of Van Eyck, Bosch and Hugo van der Hus.
