Gruuthus Museum

Gruuthusestraat 4, Brugge, Belgium

About the company:

The Gruuthus Museum is the most unique historical building in Bruges. Even in ancient times, the Gruuthus family had great wealth due to the sale of seasonings for making beer.

But Gruuthus became popular only in 1470 during the War of the Roses. King Edward IV of York fled England, fearing for his life. In Flanders, he was granted asylum by the richest family, the Groothus, the king was placed in a famous house.

The mansion was built in a beautiful courtyard and decorated with turrets. Also, of course, it should be noted located on the second floor of the house chapel, which overlooks the church of Notre Dame adjacent to the house. Therefore, the Gruuthus family had the opportunity to participate in worship without leaving their own home.

From the very first owners, not only the appearance of the house was preserved, but also some details of the original interior. For example, the main object of the kitchen is a fireplace of the XV century, which has come down to our time in perfect condition. The museum’s collection also includes ancient sculptures, pieces of furniture and, of course, a cabinet of musical instruments.
