St. Michael's Church
Sint-Michielsplein 16, 9000 Gent, Belgium
Description:
The Church of St. Michael is a structure built in 1440 – 1480, but, oddly enough, is the newest church of Ghent, made in the Gothic style. In the XVI century, the building was overtaken by difficult times of religious wars, from which it suffered cruelly.
In the seventeenth century, the war was over. But this did not affect the fact that the tower, which was planned to be built with a height of 138 meters, was never completed. This tower was built for several centuries and became a distinctive feature of the Church of St. Michael.
The building is endowed with many side chapels and choirs, perfectly in harmony with internal brick vaults, stained glass windows and white marble walls. The interior is made in the Gothic style, and contains Rococo statues, a high altar, paintings by Caspar de Craeira, Philippe de Champagne and Antonis van Dijk.
The charm of this church can be seen by any tourist - the entrance is free from April to September.
