St. John's. nikola
Donkersteeg 1, Cataloniestraat, 9000 Gent, Belgium
Description:
St. John's. Nicholas is the real heart of Ghent. This is a very ancient building, built before the XII century and reborn after the devastating fires of 1120 and 1176. It was the locals who breathed a completely new, amazing life into the church.
The church is built in the Gothic style using gray-blue stone brought on large Belgian ships. The intersection of the church is decorated with the main tower, the beauty of which delights and surprises.
The owners of the attraction were once Ghent traders who did their business in the port. Exactly St. Nicholas was always considered their patron, so his name became the name of the building.
The main tower played a significant role for the Belgians: it served as a guard bell tower until the construction of the Ghent bell tower was completed.
The difficult fate of the church did not take the Iconoclasts from its doorstep in 1566. Protestants managed to destroy church decorations so that no one could worship paintings and statues. After some time, this amazing place turned into a horse stable, and only in the XIX century people were able to realize the charm of this historical monument and gathered the church bit by bit.
