St. Bavo Cathedral
Biezekapelstraat 2, Gent, Belgium
Description:
The Cathedral of St. Bavo was formed on the site of a simple wooden church. The saint himself was so revered that every next construction of a religious object was more beautiful and unusual. What can be seen today is a direct embodiment of the Gothic style in architecture. Currently, the cathedral is the key link of the whole architectural complex, consisting of the Church of St. Nicholas and the bell tower.
The main shrine and place of pilgrimage of the cathedral was the work of two legendary artists Jan and Hubert van Eyck. This Ghent altar is the largest and most complex construction of this kind in the Netherlands, made in the XV century. Work on the altar was completed in 1432, after which it became a meeting place for various masters and artists, and later a place of pilgrimage. In itself, it demonstrates not only the religious views of the authors, but also the idea of what place a person occupies in the world.
