Saint-Bavo Cathedral
Saint Bavo Cathedral, Sint-Baafsplein, 9000 Gent, Belgium
Description:
Saint-Bavo Cathedral is an ancient church located in the city of Ghent and is the pride of citizens. The cathedral received its name in honor of Saint Bavo, a nobleman who lived in the VII century. Saint Bavo, distributing his riches, went to live in a monastery.
Originally, in 942, a chapel was built here. It was later expanded and named after St. John the Baptist. In the XII century, the church was again transformed and was decorated in the Romanesque style. Then, from the XIV to the XVI century, a large-scale reconstruction was carried out, as a result of which the building that we see today - the building of Gothic architecture - appeared.
Throughout its existence, the church has experienced many moments – both lightning strike and fire, but it was immediately restored. Nowadays it impresses with its appearance and masterpieces of art many tourists.
