St. Bavon Cathedral
Bisdomplein 1-3, 9000 Gent, Belgie
Description:
Once on this site was located only a small wooden church, but today it is a grandiose Gothic building. We are talking about the Cathedral of St. Bavo in Belgium, which appeared in 942.
The cathedral is named after a local landowner who gave everything he had to the poor and served the church all his life. Bavo was venerated by all the inhabitants of Ghent - they built churches with his name, and then awarded him the title of saint.
Today, the main attraction of the cathedral is the Ghent altar, consisting of 24 panels with 258 images of human silhouettes. The altar has two sides with paintings - internal and external.
The height of the Ghent altar is 3.5 m, the width is 5 m. When the altar is closed, on the outside you can see the images of prophets and Sibyls – forerunners of the birth of Christ. The second tier shows the scene of the Annunciation, the middle of the painting is the statues of John the Theologian and John the Baptist.
St. Paul's. Bavna is an amazing building that gathers the faith of more than one hundred people.
