Hasselt

Japanese garden

Koning Boudewijnlaan, 3500 Hasselt, Belgium

Description:

In 1992, a magnificent Japanese garden appeared in the town of Hasselt, created in the best traditions of tea gardens of the XVII century. Created with the help of specialists from Japan, it has become a kind of symbol of friendship, since 1985, linking two cities - the Belgian Hasselt and the Japanese Itami. On the territory of the garden there are small reservoirs, and a stone paved path leads to a picturesque waterfall. This is one of the favorite places for walking and romantic dates.

While visiting the garden, there is a feeling of being in Japan. On a small hill, a tea house rises, to which a path overgrown with moss leads. Near the house there is a traditional Japanese garden, a stone lantern and a palisade made of bamboo. Like all Japanese, the tea house has a strict and restrained appearance - small windows allow a fairly small amount of light, instead of glass - a grille of willow bars, the walls are made of clay, and in the floor there is a small hearth. Another traditional element - yatsuhashi - zigzag bridge, it is characteristic of "iris pond". The custom is to plant a flower of water iris in memory of a deceased or departed friend.

The Japanese Garden in Hasselt is one of the largest in Europe. It covers an area of about 2.5 hectares, on which sakura and roses stretch, the flowering of which causes great interest of residents and guests of the city. In summer you can admire the beautiful water irises, and in the autumn months calmly stroll among the motley autumn foliage.
