River Dommel

The river Dommel, Hasselt, Belgium

Description:

The Dommel River is a 146-kilometer-long river that flows through two countries: Belgium and the Netherlands. It carries its waters to the Diese River in the Netherlands, and its source is the Belgian river Per.

The Dommel River is part of the water basin of the Meuse River. She has over 20 tributaries. On Dommel there are small Belgian towns Overpelt and Nerpelt, famous for the ancient mills that were mentioned in the documents of the VIII century. Perhaps, during the reign of the Romans on this territory, the river was navigable, but from the XV century it began to grind and meander - wriggle, and in the XIX-XX centuries in the cities was removed into sewer pipes.
