Fort Eben-Emael

Rue du Fort 40, 4690, Belgium

Description:

Fort Eben-Emael is located 20 kilometers north of Liege, in Belgium, on the banks of the Alberta Canal. It was built in 1932-1935. The fort was a fortified area protected by water and surrounded by an anti-tank moat. The fort consisted of 17 battle points connected by underground tunnels, as well as an underground huge bunker located at a depth of 60 meters. The bunker housed a garrison of 1,200 people. The fort, considered impregnable, was taken by the German landing on gliders in 1940.

Now there is a museum in the fort. With the help of more than 75 mannequins dressed in military uniforms and sound effects, everyday life in the bunker as it was before is recreated. In the bunker you can also see bedrooms, kitchens, hospital, hairdresser, showers as they were originally. On the territory of the fort you can listen to the narrative of the German attack of 1940, bypass the firing points, enjoy the magnificent view, admire the trees, plants and flowers.

In the tunnels of the fort, stretching for many kilometers, an interesting game "Fortissimus" is held.
