Brabo Fountain in Antwerp
Oude Beurs 4, 2000 Antwerpen, Belgium
Description:
In the center of Antwerp you can see an interesting fountain Brabo. The fountain is a statue created by the magnificent sculptor Jeff Lambox in 1887. The statue tells us the legend of the giant Drouon Antigonus, who lived on the banks of the Scheldt, the river where Antwerp now stands.
The giant took too high a tribute for the opportunity to swim past his castle. Each time he took off the hands of sailors who refused to pay tribute. And then one day the brave soldier Silvio Brabo defeated the giant and, cutting off, threw his hands into the river. So the name of the city came out: "ant" - hand and "verpen" - to throw.
A beautiful legend has given Antwerp a legendary symbol, the hand. Here in bakeries cookies are made in the form of a hand. And the fountain, flaunting on the central square of Antwerp, has become a unique attraction of the city. An interesting fact is that water, flowing down the protrusions of the monument, disappears among the stones and comes back.
