The Palace of Margaret of York

Keizerstraat 3, Mechelen, Belgium

Description:

The palace of Margaret of York in Mechelen began its history in 1477, when Margaret, after the death of her husband, came to the city and bought a house from the bishop, not far from the center. Several years passed, and the Palace of Margaret of York appeared on this place. However, Margarita did not stop there and bought the territory adjacent to her house and a couple of houses - there the New Palace appeared.

In 1486, the palace was sold to Mechelen, and he donated the residence to Habsburg and his son. In 1500-1515 the emperor lived in the palace. Since 1611, the residence of the Jesuits was managed, and after their liquidation in 1773, disabled soldiers settled in the building. The City Theatre began its work in the Palace in 1958.

To this day, the coats of arms of Margaret of York and her husband, Charles the Bold, located above the door in the tower, remind of their former owners.
