Description:
St. Rumbolt Cathedral is located in the central square of the city of Mechelen. From anywhere in the city you can easily distinguish the unfinished tower of the cathedral. It was planned to make the tower the tallest in the world, but even unfinished it impresses with its 97-meter height. To climb to the top of the spire, tourists will have to climb 514 steps.
The central altar of the cathedral was made of marble in 1665. Behind the altar you can see a large number of frescoes depicting the life of St. Rumbolt. According to legend, the temple was built on his burial in connection with which the Cathedral received such a name.
In the XVII century, the decoration of the Cathedral was significantly enriched - the figures of the twelve apostles and four evangelists were added. The greatest interest among visitors is the icon and stained glass window Black Madonna, stored in the temple, as well as the work of Antonius Van Dyck “Crucifixion of Christ”. Do not forget 49 bells are available in the Cathedral, each of them has its own name and unique ringing.
