Collegial Church of St. Valdetruda

Rue du Chapitre 1-3, 7000 Mons, Belgium

Description:

The Collegiate Church of St. Valdetruda, located in the heart of the Belgian city of Mons, was built in the Gothic style in the form of a cross of sandstone, limestone and stone from 1450 to 1691, but the construction work was not completed until the end: the bell tower, which was supposed to be 190 meters high, remained unfinished at the roof level. The church is named after St. Valdetrude, who in the VI century organized a women’s religious commune in the city. The Holy Capitol existed for several centuries. Since 1803 it is considered the main parish church of the city.

The attraction of the interior decoration of the temple is considered the most complete in the country preserved complex of stained glass windows, made according to one scheme: around the scene from the Holy Scriptures depicted those who donated to their creation. Also here you can see the Golden wagon of the XVIII century, in which during religious holidays the saint’s cancer with relics, created in the neo-Gothic style from gilded brass instead of the destroyed crayfish of 1313, is transported around the city.
