Valencienne Tower

74 Rue des Arbalestriers, 7000 Mons, Belgium

Description:

Valenciennes Tower, located in the Belgian city of Mons, near the Grand Square, is the only thing left of the medieval fortress of the XIV century, consisting of 13 gates and towers made of stone and brick.

The tower got its name from the province of Valenciennes, now part of France, whose residents paid money to the city of Tournay in 1337 for being convicted of financial abuse. This money was used for the construction of the fortress, begun in 1340.

For a long time Valenciennes Tower was a powder warehouse. The two-tiered tower without a roof is folded at right angles of mudstone stones, its walls are 4 meters thick. Internal diameter - 10 meters, external - 18 meters.
