Militia Day in Belarus
Description:
The origins of this holiday originate in the revolutionary seventeenth, when the office of the civilian commandant of Minsk issued an order according to which the Bolshevik Mikhail Alexandrovich Mikhailov was appointed temporary chief of the militia of the All-Russian Zemstvo Union for the Protection of Order in the city. In accordance with the order, all city police officers had to give Mikhailov the weapons at their disposal according to the inventory.
Under Mikhailov, he joined the Western Front Committee of the All-Russian Zemstvo Union in April 1916, the famous revolutionary Mikhail Vasilyevich Frunze.
On the night of March 4-5, 1917, the detachments of militant squads of workers led by him, together with the soldiers of the attached units of the Minsk garrison, disarmed the city police, seized the city police department, as well as the archival and detective departments, and took under protection the most important state institutions. And in the afternoon of March 5, Nevel reported to Minsk about the formation of the police, on March 7, the Velizh district, the 9th Ezeryshchensky, the 10th - the Surazh district. A little later similar telegrams came from Dvinsk, Vitebsk, Lepel. Thus, a militia was created on the territory of Belarus, and the provincial city of Minsk, in fact, became its center.
For the first time formed units of the workers' and peasants' militia participated in the protection of public order, in the defeat of bandit formations.
Then there were the 30s, filled with an atmosphere of fear and suspicion, repression, which did not bypass the police. According to statistics, during the years of repression in the Soviet Union, more than 100,000 employees of the internal affairs bodies suffered, and more than 20,000 of them were shot.
Great Patriotic. One of the first in the battle with fascist units entered and the NKVD. The brightest example of courage and heroism is inscribed in the history of the war feat Brest militia. On that fateful day for the Soviet people on June 22, the enemy’s blow was taken along with the garrison of the Brest Fortress and the railway police of the border city, who engaged in a fierce battle with the Nazis on the approaches to the Brest station. For several days, police officers under the command of the head of the department Andrei Yakovlevich Vorobyov restrained the onslaught of the fascist units that were significantly outnumbered. The Germans had to flood the cellars of the station, where his defenders were hiding, to finally break their resistance.
The post-war years. Having fully experienced the enormous difficulties of this period, police officers continued to fulfill their official duty to protect civilians from the encroachments of the criminal environment. Sensing an acute shortage of clothes, shoes, food, means of transportation (for example, there was one horse for the whole Gomel police, and there was nothing to feed it), the police fought with speculators, thieves, murderers, guarded food warehouses, banks, regardless of personal time, carried out law enforcement in the republic.
Years passed, different periods changed in the life of the country. Exposing the cult of the personality of Stalin, Khrushchev’s thaw, 70s, characterized as years of stagnation in the economic and socio-political spheres of society, perestroika, the formation of the CIS. But no matter how epochal and dramatic they were in the fate of a large country, people in police uniforms were at the forefront of the fight against criminals, who took the brunt of the criminal environment.
Forever in the memory of the Belarusian people are the names of employees of the internal affairs bodies, servicemen of the internal troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, who died in the line of duty.
