New Year

Description:

Happy New Year!
In ancient times, the Slavs celebrated the New Year on September 1 as a year of harvest, a year of new hopes and achievements. For Belarusians, the New Year is a day when you can get together with a noisy, cheerful company, go to nature, to the dacha or just go out to the city to spend the outgoing and cheerful New Year together.

Children are waiting for gifts from St. Nicholas (Svyata Mikalai) - this is the Belarusian Santa Claus.

The tradition of Santa Claus and Snow Maiden came to Belarus together with the Soviet Union and now, instead of St. Nicholas, some children are waiting for the Snow Maiden and Santa Claus.

Traditionally, on the New Year, Belarusians wear fancy costumes, paint their faces with makeup and go to the city center. And children wait for the morning to find under the Christmas tree or in special socks hanging from the fireplace or just on the wall of gifts from their favorite hero St. Nicholas.
