Courage Monument
Belarus, Brest fortress, Brest, Memorial complex Brest fortress hero
Description:
This incredible structure in size and impact was erected on the main square of the Ceremonials in 1971. The works were led by sculptor and architect from Moscow A.P. Kibalnikov. Initially, the sculpture was planned to be 7 meters high, but then it was decided to build a structure 36 meters high, 54 meters long.
The concrete monument depicts a bust of a soldier against the background of a banner. On the back side of the sculpture there are bas-reliefs illustrating dramatic episodes of the defense of the Brest fortress. Despite the colossal size of the structure, the carefully worked-out face of the soldier is amazing. The frowning eyebrows, the bloated nostrils, the resolute look is the frozen face of a living person who has made the most important decision in his life – to die, but not to give up.
In front of the monument is a three-tier burial of 850 defenders of the Brest fortress. On some cabinets there are names, on many there is a short inscription: “Unknown”. In front of the graves of the dead, the Eternal Flame burns, near which the honor guard of schoolchildren is on duty. There is always a little music and there are flowers.
