Museum of Defense of the Brest Fortress
ooh Heroes of Defense of the Brest Fortress, Brest, Belarus
Description:
One of the main attractions of the city of Brest is the Museum of Defense of the Brest Fortress, opened in November 1956. It is located in the preserved part of the defensive barracks of the Citadel. Since the establishment of this institution, special funds were organized, which received all the exhibits, as well as finds that were transferred from the leading museums of Moscow and Leningrad. Over the next five years, employees of the Brest Fortress Defense Museum collected materials about the participants of the battles, met with them personally and collected and systematized various memories and museum items, as well as created exhibitions and conducted excursions.
In early 1959, the museum was admitted to the International Association of Museums of Military History and Weapons. In September of the same year, military units were withdrawn from the northeastern part of the Kobrin fortification and the Citadel, which made the entrance to the fortress free, without passes. The exposition area of the museum is 1,000 square meters. On its first floor there is an exhibition of portraits of the bravest defenders of the fortress, as well as sketches and paintings made by the famous artist P.S. Durchin.
