Brest

Monument to Thirst

Description:

One of the dramatic pages of the defense of the Brest fortress is an acute shortage of water. The water supply was put out of service on the first day of the war, and the summer that year was unusually hot. Smoke and gunpowder filled the horizon. The blackened faces of the fighters, baked from thirst lips testified to the incredible suffering of people. Water was needed to cool machine guns, the wounded, women and children – all the participants in the defense. It seemed to approach the river and take it, but the approaches to the water were shelled, at night the banks were illuminated by floodlights.

Many soldiers and commanders died trying to get precious drops. After the war on the banks of the rivers found punched helmets, flasks, mugs and the remains of the dead. The creators of the memorial, knowing about this tragedy, decided to tell about it using the skill of the sculptor. The figure of a soldier crawling to the water with a helmet in his hand does not leave anyone indifferent.

Today, in the outstretched helmet there are live flowers from visitors to the fortress. The length of the sculptural composition is 13 m. The material is decorative reinforced concrete, the weight of reinforced concrete is 720 tons. Size 5 natures. Major repairs and restoration works were carried out in 2001, 2003-2004, the site of the Brest Hero Fortress memorial complex reports.
