Fifth Fort
Description:
Since 2000, Fort No. 5 has become a branch of the Defense Museum of the Brest Fortress. However, this structure is very different from the buildings preserved in the Fortress.
The construction of the fifth fort dates from 1878 to 1888. The rebuilt building was surrounded by an earthen rampart and a moat with water. The building material is a brick. However, during the modernization in 1908, the brick was covered with a two-meter layer of concrete. On one side of the fort, barracks were built, on the other, the front side, the front caponier was placed on 6 guns (a structure that allows shooting in 2 directions). opposites to each other), which was connected by an underground corridor to the barracks. There were still side half-caponiers also connected by an underground passage to the barracks. In 1911-1914, another caponier was built on the back of the fort.
The 5th Fort is very well preserved and fully accessible for inspection. You can wander through underground passages and corridors, climb the earthen ramparts and go down to the barracks. Here you are given complete freedom of action and a flashlight. It will be handed to you at the ticket office, by the way, this is the only place where you can see a museum employee. Further inspection takes place on its own.
In addition to the casemates and corridors of the fort, you can see an open-air exhibition of artillery weapons, and on the walls of the barracks there are photos and artistic images dedicated to the history of the construction of the fortress and forts.
The museum is open without a weekend from 9.00 to 18.00.
