Peter and Paul Cathedral
Belarus, 246050, Gomel, Lenin Square, 6
Description:
The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul is one of the oldest temples in Gomel. For ten years, an Orthodox cathedral was erected on the banks of the Sozha River by the project of John Clark. Standing on a high hill and prominent from afar, it enters the Gomel Palace and Park ensemble.
Count Nikolai Petrovich Rumyantsev, who was the initiator of the construction, spared neither time nor money to decorate the temple. By special order, expensive church utensils, decoration, the Gospel and some icons were discharged from St. Petersburg.
For all its external simplicity, the temple is distinguished by the amazing harmony of the chapels: the central throne of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, the right aisle of the cathedral - the throne of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, in the lower church of the cathedral there is the throne of St. Mary Magdalene, and in the baptism church - the throne of St. John the Forerunner. In the cathedral rest the relics of St. Manefa of Gomel and a particle of the relics of St. Nicholas.
Today, the cathedral is not only the center of the spiritual life of the city and the region, but also a school for the training of clergy and deacons.
