Bernardine monastery

ooh Podolnaya, Grodno, Belarus

Description:

The complex of the Bernardine monastery (XVI-XVIII centuries) is another largest architectural ensemble of Grodno. Its appearance is complicated by the interweaving of three styles: Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. Despite the apparent eclecticity, all architectural elements represent a harmonious and expressive single composition. The interior is decorated with Renaissance sculptures, carvings, modeling and fresco painting.

The monastery complex is formed by a church, residential buildings, a multi-tiered bell tower. The very first, a wooden monastery, was founded here, on the lands granted in the XV century to the Bernardines, in 1494. In the second half of the XVI century, when Grodno became the actual capital of the Commonwealth, King Zhygimont III founded a stone church at the monastery here. It was consecrated by the Bishop of Vilna at the beginning of the XVII century, in 1618, this is indicated by the memorial plaque.

Later, the monastery complex suffered from a fire and at the beginning of the XVIII century was restored with a slight restructuring. In 1863, the monastery was abolished, and the church became a parish.

Located on the high bank of the Neman, it is one of the dominant in the panorama of the city.
