Borisogleb Church

Belarus, Grodno

Description:

Borisoglebskaya or Kolozhskaya Church in Grodno is a unique architectural structure, one of five preserved from the pre-Mongol period. This church is located on the bank of the river Neman. Most likely, it was built during the reign of Boris and Gleb Vsevolodkovich and consecrated in honor of Saints Boris and Gleb. After the fire of 1184, which destroyed the main church of ancient Goroden, the Borisogleb church became a cathedral city church.

Kolozhskaya church is essentially a cross-domed temple, the walls are made of plinth, brick is used only for decorative purposes. Outside the building is not plastered, so you can see a beautiful polychrome masonry. Unfortunately, it has not been fully preserved - in 1853, due to a landslide, some of the walls of the cathedral collapsed. In 1870, during restoration, rare pre-Mongol frescoes were found on the walls. The architecture of the Borisogleb church has no analogues among the preserved ones, and this suggests that at the end of the XII century there was an architectural school in Grodno.
