Brigid monastery
ooh Karl Marx, Grodno, Belarus
Description:
The Brigid Monastery is a Baroque monument of the first half of the XVII century. Beautiful, exquisite and even mysterious architectural complex occupied in former times almost a whole quarter of ancient Grodno. The location of the buildings of the complex is interesting – the church is located at the crossroads of two significant roads, which emphasizes the beauty of the building.
The buildings belong to the Baroque era, but in architecture there are many deviations from the traditional style. On the walls of the church there are very interesting ornaments. The interior is decorated with numerous sculptural compositions and more than 40 icons. In the yard of the monastery, an interesting wooden building, made without the use of nails, called the lamus, is a former hostel of brigid nuns. The two-storey house made of massive logs is an example of the tradition of Belarusian folk construction.
Other buildings of the complex include: a residential building, which forms a square courtyard with a church, and sometimes a high stone fence with gates and towers.
The monastery was founded in 1635 by the great Lithuanian marshal Krzysztof Veselowski and his wife Alexandra in memory of the adopted daughter Griselda. At their invitation, representatives of the Order of St. Brigitte came to Grodno. In 1642, the construction of a stone Baroque church began on the site of a wooden one, which 10 years later was consecrated by Vilnius Bishop Jerzy Tyszkiewicz.
