Church of the Nativity of the Virgin

ooh Novozamkovaya, 3, Grodno, Belarus

Description:

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin is part of the Basilian women’s Orthodox monastery. It was built in 1726 by the Italian architect I. Fontana. Once there was a Prechistensky church, first wooden, from the XII century stone.

The three-nave church with a rectangular altar part is characterized by an unconventional dome completion - in the form of two towers with curly domes and a central dome. The facade is richly decorated with baroque decor and completed with a triangular pediment.

On the north side of the temple adjoins a cell two-storey building. The walls of the church are plastered and generally refer to the Old Russian style.

The history of this monastery complex is rich in events. It burned, rebuilt, changed, moved, rebuilt. Only by the end of the XX century monastic life in Grodno returned to the traditional channel.

An interesting fact is that in 1877 the myrrhage of the miraculous list of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God was recorded in the monastery, which lasted six months. Miro was collected into a cross-shaped ark, which is kept in the monastery to this day.
