Kologa church

Kolozhskaya Church, Fisherman St., Grodno, Belarus.

Description:

Kolozhskaya church is located on the bank of the river Neman in the city of Grodno. From the cliff its wall is separated by only a couple of meters. This is a real historical and architectural reserve, the main attraction of the city.

Kolozhskaya (God-Glebov) Church or Kalozha, as its locals call it, is the only building that has survived since the pre-Mongol period. It is distinguished by polychrome masonry, and frescoes in conchs. Kalozha has been restored several times, and therefore today it is a functioning church - services are held here daily.

Interesting story of the origin of the name of the church - Kolozhskaya. One version concerns the inhabited area in which the church was built - Kolozhen (from Slavic) Kolozha (or calf), the Slavs called an ancient pagan grove, a sanctuary where numerous springs beat from the ground.
