Old Royal Castle

Old Royal Castle, 22 Zamkovaya Street, Grodno, Belarus

Description:

The old royal castle in the Belarusian city of Grodno was built in the XI century by Russian princes for defensive purposes. It was originally a wooden church that was repeatedly destroyed during attacks and occupations. It has also been repeatedly restored and strengthened.

When in the XIX century Grodno joined the Russian Empire, the castle was rebuilt into a hotel, royal barracks, a military library and a casino for officers.

Nowadays, the old castle represents only the palace (royal residence), preserved parts of the defensive walls, the ruins of princely chambers and churches, as well as a stone bridge connecting the castle with the city.

Since 1925 in the former royal residence there is an unusually rich Grodno historical and archaeological museum. Now the castle, like no other, needs restoration - only in this way it is possible to preserve the cultural heritage for future descendants.
