Lida castle
d. Lida, Grodno region, Belarus
Description:
Lida Castle is the oldest of the numerous castles of Belarus, located in the city of Lida, Grodno region. It was built on an artificial island of gravel and sand at the request of Prince Gedemin in 1323.
This powerful castle complex for centuries served as a reliable protection for the inhabitants of the city and neighboring settlements. It had everything that was required in order to live without leaving it for a long time: ancient loopholes, a church, various buildings, a prison and several wells. The castle has survived several wars – its walls are so strong.
In the XX century the castle underwent partial reconstruction. In one of its towers is located the historical museum of the city of Lida. Now the castle, long overgrown with numerous legends, is open to tourists: in the summer there are traditional knightly tournaments, a festival of medieval culture, named after the founder of the "Gedemin Castle". And in winter you can skate here in the courtyard.
