Church of the Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky

ooh Kozlova 11, Minsk, Belarus

Description:

If during a walk in Minsk you found yourself in the area of the Military Cemetery, then you should definitely visit the wonderful architectural monument - the Orthodox Church of St. Prince Alexander Nevsky, built in 1896-1898. A stone church in the style of Russian church baroque was built on the site of a small wooden church. The construction was carried out by joint efforts of the soldiers of the local garrison and residents of the city, among whom were the relatives of those killed in the war.

Initially, the church was supposed to become not just a place of worship, but also a monument to those soldiers and officers who died in the battles of the Russian-Turkish war. In memory of this, two memorial plaques were mounted in the central nave of the temple, on which the names of 118 soldiers of the 30th artillery brigade and the 119th Kolomna regiment were engraved. All of them heroically fell victims of the battle during the capture of the Bulgarian town of Plevna.

The temple is a very picturesque monument, its walls are made of red brick, which contrasts with the white color of the decorative elements of the facade. The temple contains a copy of one of the main Belarusian shrines - the Minsk Icon of the Mother of God, a list from which was made in the XIX century. The temple miraculously survived during the Great Patriotic War - during the bombing, a bomb pierced the dome of the temple, but did not explode. She fell right next to the icon of Nicholas the Wonderworker.
