Pishchalovsky Castle
ooh Volodarsky, Minsk, Belarus
Description:
Pishchalovsky Castle is an interesting monument of history and architecture, located in the center of the Belarusian capital. The building was built in 1825 by architect Kazimir Khrschanovich. The customer was the landowner Rudolf Pishcallo, whose name the building was named. For two centuries of its existence, the building served one purpose - it housed a prison. Rebels and revolutionaries served their sentences here, Ivan Pulikhov, who committed an attempt on the governor-general, was also executed here.
Pishchalovsky Castle is considered one of the most reliable prisons in the world. It is sometimes called the “Belarusian Bastille”. The building was built in an unusual style for its time - the beginning of the XIX century is characterized by a fashion for classicism, and this castle was built in a pseudo-Gothic style and is one of the real architectural masterpieces of Minsk of that era.
The rectangular building consisted of three floors, in the corners there were four massive rounded towers, somewhat prominent beyond the wall line. The facades are decorated in such a way that there is a direct parallel with medieval castles. A characteristic feature was a certain distance of the building from the streets. All this was intended to serve the main purpose of the building under the tsarist power, and during the revolution and civil war, and during the Great Patriotic War, and in our days.
