Independence Square is the main central square of Minsk. There are a lot of holidaymakers here on weekends. Green squares square with sculptures and benches is a favorite place for walking lovers couples and families with children.

The square began to be built in the early thirties and it was supposed to be the grandest and most impressive square of the capital. Initially, it was named after Lenin, whose monument still stands at the Government House, but later the square was renamed. During the occupation by the German invaders, most of the buildings and the square itself were partially or completely destroyed, and only by 2006 was it fully restored.

All the main buildings of the city - the Government House of the Republic of Belarus, the Minsk City Executive Committee, the Main Post Office, the Minsk Hotel and two universities - the Belarusian State and Pedagogical. From the general style of Stalinist classicism stands the Red Church of St. Simeon and St. Helena, the most famous Catholic church in Minsk. In the underground part of the square there is a multi-level parking and three storeys - their transparent glass domes face the surface. The fountain in the square at night turns into a whole musical and light show.
