Freedom Square
freedom Square, Minsk, Minsk region, Belarus
Description:
Freedom Square, or as it is otherwise called - Cathedral Square is located between the streets of Engels, International and Nemiga, on the elevated bank of the Svisloch River. In the pre-war years, it was an administrative and commercial center, it was the main central market, but today this purpose is lost. Freedom Square is one of the sights of the Upper City, which is a must see.
On the square there is a city hall with a clock. Unfortunately, this is not a historic building, but one of the projects that was restored in 2005. The first building was demolished at the beginning of the XIXth century and then its appearance changed many times until it became what we see it today. In front of the town hall there is a sculpture of a horse carriage. You can’t go far on it, but you can take a photo for memory. Near the town hall is the Children's Philharmonic building, which previously had the Church of the Holy Spirit. A little to the side there is a complex of the living yard, which now houses all sorts of shops, restaurants and cafes.
In the center of the square is a square in which there was once a fountain. Now there is a glass pyramid, which serves as lighting for the underground halls of the town hall.
