I. Kolas Square

j. Kolasa, Minsk, Belarus

Description:

The square, named after the famous Belarusian poet Yakub Kolas, is located in the central part of the city. It has an elongated shape, closed with buildings for various purposes. In the center is a landscaped square, hiding the noise of busy highways around the square.

The square is located on the site of the historical town of Komarovka, the name of the poet received in 1956 (previously it was simply called Komarovskaya). It was formed as a result of the reconstruction of the Komarovsk forks (the fusion of the former Logoi and Borisov tracts was called) and the construction of the building of the Institute of Physical Education (1936-39). For a long time, the Institute remained the only multi-storey stone building among low-rise mainly wooden buildings with residential buildings and trading pavilions.

In the 70s of the 20th century, the view of the square was transformed. In the square in the center of the square was erected a monument to Yakub Kolas, erected in honor of the 90th anniversary of the national poet.

Nowadays, the finished view of the square gives the framing of stone multi-storey buildings. Among them: Philharmonic, TSUM, Minsk Printing Plant, residential buildings with built-in trading enterprises.
