Sculpture "Girl with an umbrella"

Minsk, Belarus, Mikhailovsky Square

Description:

In the Mikhailovsky Square of Minsk there is an amazing girl who stands on one of the alleys in any weather, at any time of day or night. This is the famous “Girl with an umbrella”, a monument to the young victims of the tragedy at the metro station “Nemiga”, which occurred on May 30, 1999.

The author of the sculpture is Vladimir Zhbanov. As a model for the monument posed ten-year-old daughter of the sculptor, Masha. The youth of the model was reflected in the appearance of the statue. This is a growth figure made of bronze. A young, fragile, barefoot girl in a short, as if wet, dress opens a torn umbrella above her head. The sculpture is not made in the spirit of portrait realism. It is rather a surreal hint, a group portrait of all the teenagers who died. It is believed that touching the "Girl with an Umbrella" protects against accidents.
