Complex of Nikolaev Church
ooh Surty, 19, Mogilev, Belarus
Description:
The Nikolaev Church complex is the only preserved complex in Eastern Belarus in the style of Belarusian Baroque. On paper, St. Nicholas Monastery was founded at the beginning of the XVII century, the first building was actually created only in the 70s of the XVII century. The monastery was first female, then male, and then completely became just a parish. By the end of the XIX century, the church was very dilapidated, lost part of the interior and required significant restoration. As a result of repairs, some interior details, including some of the old paintings, were made anew.
In 1924, the temple was closed, later there was a book base, the walls and the dome were plastered by this time. During the restoration work of our time, part of the paintings of the XVII century were opened, they can be seen today.
Nowadays, the restored complex consists of stone buildings of St. Nicholas and Winter Onufriev Church, a residential house and a bell tower, surrounded by a stone fence with gates. Nikolsky temple is the oldest in the city. Due to its special architecture, it looks very elegant.
But although from the point of view of architecture the church is related to churches, yet the design of the facade is based on local Belarusian techniques and is related, rather, to Moscow architecture. The tiers are decorated with pilasters and columns, which are covered with stucco ornament depicting plants.
This church is considered an outstanding monument of Belarusian architecture of the XVII century. The original frescoes of the temple were almost not restored, but the outstanding carved iconostasis was restored almost in its original form.
