Polotsk - the oldest city of Belarus

Description:

The history of Belarusian statehood begins with the oldest city on our territory – Polotsk. About those times, the borders of the first and second millennia still remember the walls of St. Frasinev’s white stone temple, one of the oldest in Belarus. The relics of Efrosynya Polotskaya herself, the first East Slavic woman saint, who is honored by both Catholics and Orthodox, rests nearby, in a nearby church, on the territory of the monastery of the same name.

It was in Polotsk that the most powerful prince Vseslav the Sorcerer ruled, whose name for us was preserved not only by chronicles, but also bylins - it was his image that formed the basis of the famous "Volga". Prince Vseslav builds a temple in Polotsk in the image and likeness of Constantinople Sofia. In the rebuilt form, the temple has been preserved to this day, proudly towering over the steep shore of the Western Dvina. It is especially good to listen to organ concerts.

We will walk along the old Polotsk streets, admire the churches in the retrospective-Russian style, neo-Gothic Protestant churches and strict churches. And be sure to take a photo on the site of the geographical center of Europe and at the monument to the unique letter of the Belarusian alphabet.

Do not forget that Polotsk is also the birthplace of our first printer, the person who first published a printed book in the Old Belarusian language, Francis Skaryna. We will be able to see his Bible, as well as many other equally interesting exhibits in the Museum of Belarusian Printing, which, by the way, is located within the walls of the Brotherly School of the XVIII century.
