Epiphany

Nizhne-Pokrovskaya Street, Polotsk, Vitebsk region, Belarus

Description:

The white-stone Orthodox cathedral was built in 1777 in the Baroque style. It is part of the now abolished Holy Epiphany Monastery. Actually, construction began in 1761, and on August 5, 1777, the cathedral was consecrated.

Initially, the temple was a strict one-apse cross-domed stone temple with two towers on the main facade, but was subsequently repeatedly rebuilt. Like many others, in Soviet times the Epiphany Cathedral was closed as a temple. First there was a gym, later - an art gallery. But in 1991, the cathedral was reopened for worship.

Of the most revered images here is the icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow”, three fragments of fresco painting of the second half of the XVIII century have also been preserved.

Located in the middle of a modern residential area on the right bank of the Dvina, the slender and strict Epiphany Cathedral is not only a spiritual, but also an architectural decoration of the area. It is the object of the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of the Republic of Belarus.
