Former Lutheran Church

Nizhne-Pokrovskaya Street, 11, 211400, Polotsk, Vitebsk region, Republic of Belarus.

Description:

The Lutheran Church (Kirha) in Polotsk is a well-preserved monument of neo-Gothic architecture. Many temples and churches were destroyed or damaged during wartime. But the church on Nizhne-Pokrovskaya Street has been preserved in its natural form to this day and is now the only example of the neo-Gothic style in Polotsk. Red brick, pointed towers, calm, pointed windows - features inherent in Gothic temples.

For a long time, scientists had difficulty determining the exact date of construction of the church. But not so long ago, documents were found that the opening and consecration of the church took place on December 18, 1888.

After the revolution, the church was closed. In the postwar period, a cinema worked in the building for some time. In 1950, the exposition of the Local History Museum was moved to the former temple. This oldest museum in the city continues its activities in the church building today.

The exposition area of the museum is 375 square meters. Here you can learn about the cultural, political and economic life of the city in different periods of its existence.
