Description:
The Cross-Vozdvizhensky Cathedral is located on the territory of the Spaso-Efrosinevsky monastery in the city of Polotsk. It was built in 1893-97. The project of the cathedral was carried out by architect U.F. Korshikov. The style of construction is Russian-retrospective. It belongs to the Russian-Byzantine direction in architecture. The church was built on donations that were collected for several years.
St. Ephrosyne Monastery for a long time was without a large spacious church, because on holidays and especially on the day of memory of St. Ephrosyne of Polotsk, a very large number of people always came to the monastery. Therefore, it was decided to build a large temple.
In the XX century, the temple suffered from shells, stood empty for a long time, during the Great Patriotic War, fascists were in the monastery, and the temple and part of the monastery were fenced with wire, there were Soviet prisoners of war.
In 1989, the first liturgy was held in the temple, and in 1990 the temple was opened after renovation. In the cathedral there are two miraculous icons of the Mother of God.
