Holy Protection Church
Belarus, Vitebsk region, Polotsk district, the city of Polotsk, Francisk Skaryna Avenue, 48.
Description:
The Holy Protection Church is located on the Nizhne-Pokrovskaya street of the city of Polotsk. The Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God was built in 1781, originally it was the cemetery church of the Epiphany Monastery. The Cathedral Church was declared in 1804, and in 1833 the church received parish status.
The building of the temple was renewed and rebuilt several times, in the 60s it was badly damaged by fire, so it was subsequently dismantled. In the 90s, the residents of Polotsk wanted to restore the church. Archaeological research was carried out for the preservation of the foundation, as well as the consecration of the place of the future temple. Work on the construction of the church began in 1997 and resumed only in the early two thousand years.
The temple was opened and consecrated in 2004. The authorship of the project belongs to the architect Domakurov and engineer Asinovsky.
The architectural composition of the church is made in the style of traditional Russian architecture. A two-tier tent belfry and a prayer hall create a sense of simplicity and grandeur. Also in the temple there is a miraculous icon “Greet to Humility”.
