Church of the Holy Spirit of the Holy Spirit of the convent

Republic of Belarus, Vitebsk region, city of Vitebsk, Tolstoy str., 15.

Description:

Holy Spirit convent in Vitebsk was founded in 1380, it is one of the oldest monasteries. Tradition says that it was founded under the Holy Spirit Orthodox Church, which was built by Prince Olgerd of Vitebsk. According to another version, the monastery was founded by his wife Juliana (Ulyana) Tverskaya. The Church of the Holy Spirit was the main temple where nuns prayed in the monastery.

The monastery and church have undergone many tests. In the Middle Ages, the monastery wanted to convert to the Catholic faith, there were many disputes about this, for some time the Orthodox nuns had to stay outside the monastery. Only in the XIX century the monastery began to function as an Orthodox, and in the Church of the Holy Spirit began to serve the Liturgy.

In 1923, the Church of the Holy Spirit was closed, in the fifties the church was destroyed. In 2001, a blessing was received from the Synod of the Belarusian Orthodox Church for the revival of the monastery. The monastery was reconstructed and beautified, the monastic cells were restored, and a new church of the Holy Spirit was built.
