Description:
The monument to the heroes of the Patriotic War of 1812 is one of ten monuments installed in the places of combat battles during the Patriotic War. It was installed opposite the former governor's palace in a place called the Assumption Hill. It was built according to the project of the winner of the All-Russian competition for the development of the project of a monument in honor of the heroic battles of Russian troops near Vitebsk by the architect I.A. Fomin.
The monument to the heroes of the Patriotic War of 1812 is a tapering column to the top, crowned with a double-headed eagle of bronze on a ball, mounted on a rectangular pedestal. The pedestal is also decorated with a commemorative plaque “Immortal Valor of the Heroes of the Patriotic War, participants in the battles near Vitebsk on July 13, 14, 15 and October 26, 1812”. The height of the column is 26 meters, and the total weight is more than 110 tons. Initially, the project did not have an eagle, but in the process of work appeared not only it, but also bronze jewelry that has not survived to this day. The monument itself is slightly taller and thinner than in the original project. The column was made of 11 blocks of polished red granite, and four mortars were added.
The monument was laid on October 26, 1911 and opened on December 6, 1912.
Nowadays, it attracts many tourists and citizens who want to pay tribute to fallen soldiers.
