Vitebsk

Pushkin Street

ooh Pushkina, Vitebsk, Belarus

Description:

A very small street of 200 meters in the center of old Vitebsk is named after the great Russian poet. On the map of Vitebsk it appeared in the 19th century and then was called Theatre.

The area along which the street passed was formerly occupied by the Upper Castle, besides there was a pond, later covered up. Already in the 20th century, the street was straightened, and it began to pass through the square, which was previously rounded. In the middle of the 20th century, a monument to Pushkin was erected here, which was replaced by another in 1989.

Already in the 21st century, in 2011, the street was renovated - laid out with granite tiles, fountains were installed - and made pedestrian. Now you can safely walk here, enjoying the color of the beautiful Belarusian city.

It is interesting that the bridge over the Vitba River, along which Pushkin Street passes, was chosen by the newlyweds. On Fridays and Saturdays, a stream of newlyweds flows here, who fasten their ties with a symbolic lock on the railings of the bridge.
