Tolstoy Street
Description:
Tolstoy Street is located in the historical center of Vitebsk, in the October district. It runs from Suvorov Street and Voskresenskaya Square to the bank of the Western Dvina River and the mouth of the Vitba River. The length of the street is only 200 meters.
The old name of the street is Podvinskaya. The street was named after Leo Tolstoy shortly after his death in 1910. Then on the street were: branches of the Moscow International Trade and Moscow Land Banks, a society of merchant clerks. At the intersection with Suvorovskaya Street was located the now restored Resurrection (Market) Church. Its building, built in the late Baroque style, decorated with two bell towers with eleven bells, is a real decoration of this street.
In 2010, the asphalt covering on almost the entire length of the street was replaced by paving stones, decorative lanterns were installed. The street became pedestrian and returned to the historical view of the late nineteenth century.
