Zamkovaya Street
Description:
Castle street of the Belarusian city of Vitebsk with a length of 300 meters is located at the junction of the Railway and October districts of the city.
Castle Street is considered one of the oldest in the city. The first buildings on the site of the street existed already in the XI-XII centuries. Formed on the territory of the Lower Castle in the XIV-XV centuries, the street was originally called the Great. For some time the street was called the Dominican, in 1922 the street was named in honor of Leon Trotsky, and later called the Station. Researcher Sapunov claims that the first mention of this street appeared in 1594.
Until 1974, Zamkova Street together with Kirov Street was part of Kirov Avenue, which affected the numbering of houses. In 1974, the street regained its historical name. Now it is built up with 3 – 4-storey buildings. Here you can look at the Annunciation Church, the Yakub Kolas National Academic Drama Theater, the Vitebsk Hotel, the Colosseum nightclub, the central department store and other buildings.
