Marc Chagall Museum

d. Vitebsk, st. Pokrovskaya, 11.

About the company:

The Marc Chagall Museum is located in Vitebsk, on Pokrovskaya Street and consists of two equally important parts. This is a house-museum, which presents household items of the turn of the XIX-XX centuries, and the art center of Marc Chagall, where exhibitions of his works are regularly held.

In the house on Pokrovskaya Street, which was built by the artist’s father in the early 1900s, Marc Chagall spent his youthful years. He wrote about this period of his biography in his autobiographical book My Life. The museum was opened in 1997. And in addition to household items of the XIX-XX centuries, it also contains copies of archival documents and works of the artist, telling about the years of life of Marc Chagall and his parents in Vitebsk.

The Marc Chagall Art Center was established in 1992. There are constantly held exhibitions of graphic works by Marc Chagall (lithography, wood engraving, etchings, aquainting). The museum’s collection includes a series of illustrations for Gogol’s poem “Dead Souls” (1923-1925), a series of color lithographs on the theme “Bible”, created in 1956 and 1960, a cycle of color lithographs “The 12 Tribes of Israel” (1960) and other famous works by Marc Chagall.
