Vitebsk

Vitebsk station

Description:

In 1866, the Dinaburg-Vitebsk railway was built in the north of Belarus, connecting Vitebsk with the city of Dinaburg (now Daguvpils). At the same time, in 1866, the building of the railway station was built in Vitebsk - an expressive building of three floors with a closed pedestrian transition bridge to passenger platforms. The construction was completed quickly, and in the same year the first train from Polotsk arrived in Vitebsk.

In 1912, the station building was finally completed, but, unfortunately, not for long. In 1941-45, during the Great Patriotic War, as a result of air strikes and explosions of shells, the old railway station building was destroyed almost to the ground. A few years later, a new building was erected, which appears to the eyes of guests of Vitebsk today. The author of the project of the building was the architect B.S. Mezentsev. In subsequent years, the architecture of the Vitebsk railway station did not change, the last reconstruction took place at the end of 2009.
