Salt Lake Salar de Uni
neighborhood of Uyuni, southwestern Bolivia
Description:
Salar de Uni is one of those points of our planet, which one hundred percent do not fit into the framework of everyday ideas about the world. You can’t say that it is particularly beautiful or cozy here. Huge, spacious, empty space, unambiguous colors shining under the scorching sun of Bolivia. This landscape is incredible. It doesn't just delight or amaze, it flips the gut, it changes the picture of the world. The mirror effect is especially impressive - this is how the parched lake looks after rains, when for some time the purest water is on the salt crust. Also, without exception, everyone, including local residents, is amazed by the flamingos living here.
The unique salt lake stretches over an area of more than 10,500 square meters at an altitude of 3,650 meters above sea level. This is the largest salt plain in the world. The formation of the lake occurred more than ten million years ago and is associated with the retreat of the ocean from the mainland. The main minerals that make up salt marsh, halite and gypsum, the inner part is covered with a layer of salt 2-8 meters thick. This place, of course, is not just a natural attraction. Here, table salt is mined, which is also used in construction. Tourists coming here can stay in hotels built from salt blocks.
